Deja Vu All Over Again

July 28, 2008

Check out the CNN news article -

"Budget office projects U.S. deficit to hit $477 billion"

No, this article didn't come out today, it's from 4 years ago. In this article the bad news was that surplus that Bush inherited was gone, and had turned into a $477 billion deficit. The good news in this article was the the white house planned to cut this $477 billion deficit in half by the year 2009.

This morning the government released some new budget numbers -

"White House forecasts 482 bln dollar US budget deficit next year"

I guess we didn't quite hit the "cut in half" target.

One more thing. The $100 billion or so we spend in Iraq every year isn't in any of these numbers. That money is funded with "emergency supplementals", because it would be too hard for the government to predict accurately, and they wouldn't want to put out any numbers you couldn't count on.
