A 10-Minute Career Reality Check

TAKE
CONTROL

You think you know what's holding you back.
You're probably wrong about all of it.

Based on the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu
The Real Question

What is actually
controlling your fate?

🚪
Open Doors
Who gets the interview? Who gets the callback? Who even hears about the opportunity?
📈
Your Trajectory
Why do some people accelerate and others plateau — with nearly identical credentials?
🎯
Your Ceiling
Is there an invisible cap on where you can go — and do you even know what's creating it?
Common Hypotheses

You probably blame
one of these.

?
Your Degree / Training
"If I had an MBA, everything would be different."
?
Your Resume / CV
"My experience doesn't look right on paper."
?
Your Work Ethic
"If I just work harder, results will follow."
?

"I need one more certification, one more tool."

Your Personality
"I'm just not a natural networker / leader."
?
The Economy / Bad Luck
"The market is terrible. The timing is wrong."
None of these is the full picture. Not even close.
The Framework

Welcome to
Pierre Bourdieu

Concept Plain English What it means for your career
Field The arena you're competing in — with its own unwritten rules Tech, finance, academia, and startups are different fields. The rules of one don't transfer cleanly to another. Knowing your field's rules is power.
Economic Capital Money, assets, financial resources Can you afford to take the unpaid internship? Move cities? Ride out a job search? This matters more than people admit.
Cultural Capital Education, credentials, skills, tastes, know-how Degrees, certifications, language, polish. This is what most people obsess over — but it's only one piece.
Social Capital Your network — who you know and who knows you The hidden job market is real. Most roles are filled before they're posted. Who vouches for you matters enormously.
Symbolic Capital Reputation, prestige, recognition, legitimacy Which institutions you came from. Which names drop naturally in conversation. The brand you carry, consciously or not.
Habitus Your deeply ingrained instincts — how you see and move through the world Confidence in certain rooms. Comfort with ambiguity. Whether you feel like you "belong." This is the hardest to change, and the most powerful.
The Hard Part

Now look at yourself.
Honestly.

Economic
  • Do you have a financial runway?
  • Can you invest in yourself?
  • Could you survive 6 months without income?
Cultural
  • Are your credentials recognized in your target field?
  • Do you communicate the way insiders do?
  • What's genuinely missing vs. what do you just think is missing?
Social
  • Who in your network opens doors?
  • Who can vouch for you credibly?
  • Are you investing in relationships before you need them?
Symbolic
  • What institutions or brands do you carry?
  • What's your reputation in the field?
  • Are you visible to the people who matter?
Most people are dangerously over-invested in one type of capital — and nearly blind to the others. Where are your real gaps?
The Plot Twist

And then AI arrived.
Does it change everything?

Capital Type AI's Real Impact Threat Level What This Means for You
Cultural AI amplifies skilled people. A strong thinker with AI is 10× more productive. A weak thinker with AI still produces weak outputs. Amplifier If you have deep domain knowledge, AI makes you more valuable — not less.
Social AI cannot build genuine trust, relationships, or reputation for you. Zero impact Your network is AI-proof. Invest here heavily.
Symbolic Prestige and credibility are human judgements. They don't automate. Zero impact The institutions and reputations that open doors still matter as much as ever.
Economic AI may compress some entry-level wages — but this varies massively by field. Varies Know your specific field's dynamics. Don't generalize from headlines.
Habitus Confidence, judgment, and knowing how to operate in a room — fully human. Zero impact The instincts you build over years of experience compound. AI has none of these.
AI changes one slice of your capital. It leaves the rest — often the most important parts — completely untouched.
Take Control

Stop optimizing the
wrong variable.

1
You are playing in a field with rules. Know them. Most people don't even know what game they're in.
2
Your capital is multi-dimensional. Economic, cultural, social, symbolic, habitus. All of it matters. Audit all of it.
3
Find your real gap — not your assumed one. The thing you're ignoring is probably more important than the thing you're obsessing over.
4
AI is not the story. Four of the five forms of capital that determine your fate are completely untouched by AI — and one of them it might even amplify.
Do the audit. Find the gap. Take control.
